Popular Glendale-based sangoma Sekuru Nyangatayani, born Peter Chingudzi, left a lasting impression in Mozambique after leading a delegation of Zimbabwean entertainers during the country’s 50th Independence Day celebrations.

Sekuru Nyangatayani was invited by Magoe District Member of Parliament Carlos Momande and joined thousands of revellers in commemorating the historic occasion on June 25.

He travelled with a star-studded line-up that included Sungura Queen Wasu Dacoda, Chipo Muchegwa, Boom Beto, Junior Hwinza and comedian-cum-musician Llyod “Matumbu” Jack, among other upcoming artistes.

The Zimbabwean performers wowed the crowd with energetic performances that kept fans on their feet throughout the celebrations.

Speaking to H-Metro, MP Momande expressed gratitude for Sekuru Nyangatayani’s continued support.

“We received overwhelming support from Sekuru Nyangatayani, who brought Zimbabwean artistes to help us celebrate our 50th Independence anniversary,” he said.

“He is always just a phone call away whenever we invite him. His presence shows the strong bond and brotherhood that exists between the people of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.”

The celebrations were also attended by FRELIMO leaders in Magoe District, including Marlen Sande Sousa and Neto Guidione Faife.

Sekuru Nyangatayani said he was touched by the warm reception his delegation received.

“We had a wonderful time in Mozambique. The people were very welcoming and hospitable. It never felt like we were in a foreign country,” he said.

“Our artistes delivered polished performances and the fans responded in a big way. It was a memorable experience.”

The entertainment did not end there, as the same artistes later performed at Mukumbura Border Post, where they once again thrilled hundreds of fans.

Sekuru Nyangatayani said the peaceful relations between Zimbabwe and Mozambique continue to inspire him.

“The friendship between our two countries is something to be proud of. The unity and love shared by our people is what impressed me the most,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sekuru Nyangatayani is set for another cross-border show after receiving an invitation to perform at Kanyemba Border Post on July 18.

The event will also feature Zambian artiste Gas Gee and Simon Mutambi, and is expected to attract music lovers from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique, taking advantage of the area’s unique location where the three countries meet.
