ZIMPAPERS in partnership with lsland Hospice on Friday launched Takkie Day, an initiative that encourages people to buy sports shoes to raise money to support cancer patients.

The launch also marked the 24th anniversary of Takkie Day, which has since been expanded to Takkie Week and will run from May 23 to May 29 annually.

Zimpapers public relations and communications manager Ms Pauline Matanda said the company was pleased to be part of the event.

“The event is a build-up to the Zimpapers Cancer Power Walk campaign. Cancer is one of the company’s corporate social responsibility pillars as well as Sustainable Development Goal 3. As such, Zimpapers has entered into partnership with Island Hospice in hosting the annual Zimpapers Cancer Power Walk Campaign,” she said.

Mrs Pat Izzett, who is the brains behind Takkie Day, said: “It’s an honour to be here and join the celebration of the launch. I assure you this will go a long way. Takkie Day started with walkers and subsequently reached out to schools through the Zimbabwe Junior Squash team, and has since expanded to include corporates and individuals.”

For Island Hospice executive director Mr Mudiwa Mundawarara, corporate partnerships are key to the sustainability the institution’s direct care services.

lsland Hospice board member Mrs Memory Macheka also commended participants for taking a stand against cancer.

“During this Takkie Week, corporate, schools and individuals are encouraged to wear their favourite pair of takkies and to make a donation to lsland through buying bright laces to decorate their takkies; these laces can be bought for a dollar. This year we introduced limited edition lsland-branded takkies that can be bought for US$25 per pair on a pre-order basis,” she said.
