THE Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency is carrying out a census of service to serve as a barometer for the performance of the service sectors of the economy and provide information on the distribution of services countrywide.
This was revealed at a User-Producer Symposium which took place at Troutbeck Resort last week.
The census is being carried out among the retailing, wholesaling, hotel and catering trades and personal household service trades sectors.
Delegates from ZESA, GMB and other players in the service sector confirmed that they were filling questionnaires from ZIMSTAT.
Results are expected by end of this year.
In his keynote address, ZIMSTAT director general Mr Dzinotizei Mutasa challenged members to work towards credible and truthful statistics as they were fundamental in the national economy.
“Statistics are the basis for evidence-based decision making.
“It is therefore of paramount importance that ZIMSTAT and members of the National Statistical System (NSS) produce statistics that will tell the truth about Zimbabwe and its population in the various domains.
“Statistics should not fabricate reality, but should reveal and illuminate it,” said Mr Mutasa.
The last services survey was carried out in 1980/81 and is now outdated and insufficient.
