The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is committed to promoting a crime free environment conducive for investors in line with President Mnangagwa’s Zimbabwe is open for business mantra, a senior cop has said.

Addressing a parade to mark the graduation of 179 police officers who have completed the Support Unit induction course at Chikurubi yesterday, Officer Commanding Support Unit Commissioner David Mahoya said ZRP will continue to discharge its duties to create a crime free society where investors can do business without being harassed.

“Support Unit has a responsibility to cultivate a peaceful environment which enables both the people and investors to pursue their economic and social dreams without fear of crime or harassment by criminal renegades,” he said.

“This will augment President Mnangagwa’s mantra,‘Zimbabwe is open for businesses’ and other programmes.”

Comm Mahoya said curbing of crimes was crucial as it would embrace the Government’s Transitional Stabilisation Programme (STP) in uprooting indiscipline and corruption to bring economic renaissance.

“The Government of Zimbabwe through the ministry of Finance and Economic Development launched a Transitional Stabilisation Programme in a bid to set the economy on a recovery path after years of stagnation,” he said.

“The blue print contains specific measures to uproot entrenched indiscipline and corruption including nipping all opportunities for rent seeking.”

Comm Mahoya implored members of the ZRP to be vigilant and increase their state of preparedness to render support anywhere, especially during these times when weather was unpredictable due to ongoing climate change.

“I challenge you all to prime yourself so that you are ever geared for duty,” he said. “Such high state of vigilance becomes relevant today than ever before, especially in light of unprecedented climate change induced catastrophes within the region like the recent Cyclone Idai scourge which claimed lots of lives.

“Indeed, as Support Unit, we should be always be geared to react to any eventualities in order to support the general populace.”

Comm Mahoya said the ZRP Support Unit division also collaborated with other security sectors to augment security in various areas when necessary.

“Support Unit does not operate in isolation, but in conjuction with other stakeholders, like the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) and the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) to discharge our duty to fight crime and any other social vices as enshrined in the constitution,” he said.

“We operate within the dictates of our operational order.”

The ZRP Support Unit division is currently deployed in the areas mostly affected by the Tropical Cyclone Idai together with the ZDF to rescue marooned people and recover trapped bodies in Chimanimani.
