ZIMBABWE Table Tennis Association is for the second time since 2014 starting the annual table tennis training sessions in preparation for the National Inter-schools, Zimbabwe-Open and Zone 5 2015 table tennis competitions. The table tennis practice sessions scheduled to commence tomorrow (Saturday) at Prince Edward High School in Harare are a continuation of the Under-18s and 21s table tennis team building process, aiming at choosing players to play in the U-18s, 21s, open and veteran age groups in the upcoming tournaments.
The exercise has been a success from 2014 as the U-12 boys scooped five medals in the International Table Tennis Federation Games played in Botswana in August. Among the 2014 successful players representing the ZTTA was First Class Academy’s Vimbai Makuvaza who is the holder of the Zimbabwe’s U-21 girls’ championship title. ZTTA chairperson, Newman Gomendo, confirmed that Makuvaza was the only girl in the team and she will automatically compete in the National Interschool table tennis competitions from September 19 to 20 to defend her title as well as in the Zone 5 competitions to be played in Namibia later this year.
“This exercise helps a lot as it enables us to move towards the national and international competitions fully geared.
“We choose players with the greatest potential from different provincial and national competitions like the Manicaland Table Tennis Tournament held last month in Mutare,” said Gomendo.
