ZUSA games kick off

for the Zim-babwe Universities Sports Associ-ation Games.
The two-day event starts today and will end tomorrow with 10 universities expected to take part in the games.
Participants will fight for honours in netball, volleyball, darts, karate, cricket, basketball, rugby, soccer and athletics.
The top two teams in each discipline will progress to the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union Games in Masvingo from May 26 to 28.
Chinhoyi University of Techno-logy sports director, Petros Musiwa-cho said all the universities have confirmed their participation in the 12th edition of the ZUSA Games.
“Virtually all the universities will take part but some will bring in large contingents while others will have small teams.
“Harare Institute of Technology will be making their first appearance at the Games and have teams for netball, basketball and football,” said Musiwacho.
Musiwacho said they were going to use the ZUSA and ZITSU games to select outstanding athletes who will represent the nation at the World Students Games scheduled for China in August.
“After these competitions we want to identify individuals who will represent Zimbabwe in China.
“This will be done according to their performance in all these competitions,” said Musiwacho.
He said they expect high level of competition as the Games have continued to develop over the years with the standards improving in terms of performance.
The University of Zimbabwe are the defending champions in the Games after they came first ahead of Chinhoyi University of Techno-logy and Midlands State University in last year’s event held at Africa University.
Other universities that are expected to compete include Africa University, Catholic University, Bindura University, Great Zimba-bwe, Harare Institute of Technology and the National University of Science and Technology.
