Zvasiya eyes Olympics slot

Zvasiya left the country a couple of years ago and has not represented the country for a while. In a telephone interview from the United States where he is training at the moment, Zvasiya said he was looking forward to qualifying and representing the country.
“The Olympic Games are the goal next year nothing less than that. I just have to make the team,” he said.
Zvasiya said he has been competing in a number of events both indoor and outdoor as part of his preparations for the London Olympics.
He said he will take part in a number of races next year as part of the build-up to the London 2012 Olympics.
“I have indoor meets from mid January, then the British Trials’ Championships in mid February. I will also be running in the South African outdoors series from the end of February for the first time since 2002,” he said.
Zvasiya concentrates on the 400m and the 800m events. His personal best in the 400m indoor is 45,9 seconds which he ran at the World Indoor Championships in March.
“It will be my first year competing in the 800m. I will be running both the 400 and the 800m next year,” he said.
Zvasiya was part of the team that won gold at the African Athletics Championships in 2004 in the 4x400m relay team which had Young Talkmore Nyongani, Themba Ncube and Lewis Banda.
At the same event Zvasiya made headlines when he got on the podium and sang the country’s national anthem.
Organisers had played the wrong anthem and Zvasiya got on the stage to sing the correct one.
