Zvishavane Town Council has embarked on the rehabilitation of storm water drains in Mandava high-density suburb after receiving $33 000 from the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara).
Town Secretary Mr Tinoda Mukutu said the $33 000 they got from Zinara was part of the $714 000 that they were allocated for this year for road rehabilitation by Zinara.
“We have so far received $33 000 from the Zimbabwe National Road Administration for our yearly allocation of funds for road rehabilitation.
“We have prioritised to work on the lining of storm water drains in Mandava high-density suburb as the current situation in this oldest suburb is an eyesore. Our engineers are actually working on the ground.
“The $33 000 is part of the $714 000 which we were allocated by Zinara and as more funds are released more rehabilitation works will be done in the town,” he said.
Mr Mukutu said the storm water drainage system in Mandava was clogged as people continued to throw litter into the storm water drains, adding that the heavy rains experienced early this year carried litter into the storm drains causing blockages.
“More work needs to be done in Mandava and other high density suburbs in terms of road works, which entail road reconstruction, rehabilitation, resealing, overlaying and marking,” he said.
“We will only be able to do our routine road maintenance work as the money is too little to conduct any major road works.”
Mr Mukutu said they have already flighted a tender for tarring of roads in the central business district while waiting for disbursement of more money.
“We are expecting to receive more funds soon to spruce up our CBD road networks as we premise our town as an investment destination,” he said.
