The Herald tops readership
Business Reporter
THE Herald has maintained its pole position as the most widely-read daily in Zimbabwe, with close to a million adult urban readers, according to a latest independent media survey.
In its third quarter report covering July to September, the Zimbabwe All Media and Product Survey shows that the Zimpapers flagship is read by an estimated 916,714 people from the age of 15.
This makes it the most widely-read daily among urbanites, being read by 36 percent of all urban Zimbabweans over 15.
It is a slight improvement compared to the second quarter when the paper was read by 34 percent of the adult population.
The latest Zamps results keep The Herald at the top of the readership list, as it has been for 12 decades.
The newspaper celebrated its 120th anniversary in July this year and during this period, it has been the most widely-read paper.
While the latest report has confirmed The Herald’s dominance of the urban market, the previous independent Zamps survey also
US$30m people’s market on cards
Municipal Reporter
A LEBANESE company, Consortio International, has won a tender to build the US$30 million Mupedzanhamo 2 on Shawasha Grounds in Mbare.
The new market is expected to decongest the existing Mupedzanhamo.
It will have over 1 000 stalls to cater for more informal traders.
The multi-storey building will have a parkade, banking halls, eateries and shops.
The decision to build a second marketplace in Mbare is expected to promote entre-preneurship. The city and the Lebanese firm will jointly build and manage the complex.
However, the city’s equity in the business will be determined by the value of its land.
Evaluation is underway.
US slaps diamond firms with sanctions
Bulawayo Bureau
THE United States has added on its sanctions list two Zimbabwean diamond mining firms, Mbada Diamonds and Marange Resources.
The move, seen as a ploy to frustrate efforts to improve the economy through diamond sales, comes shortly after the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme granted Zimbabwe the nod to unconditionally export its gemstones from Marange fields.
Mines and Mining Development Minister Obert Mpofu is on record as saying Zimbabwe was geared to become an economic giant after the KP approval.
He said the country would no longer beg for foreign funding as it was expecting to rake in over US$3 billion per year from diamond sales.
According to the latest US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, the two companies have been added onto the “specially
