Churches to pay commercial rents

Michael Chideme Municipal Reporter
HARARE City councillors want churches leasing council land and running profit-making schools or businesses on their premises to be charged commercial rents rather than the very small church rents.
Councillors believe churches have departed from their status as non-profit organisations.
Councillors also want Government to investigate church premises to establish whether the facilities available are suitable for school and crèche environments.
This follows allegations that pre-school children were being forced to use adult ablution facilities at church premises.
The matter was discussed during a recent full council meeting with councillors accusing churches of running schools and crèches on church premises.
Mayor Muchadeyi Masunda promised to take up the matter with Education, Sport, Arts and Culture Minister David Coltart.
