‘Women less corrupt’
From Temba Dube in Kadoma
VOTERS should elect more women into leadership positions as records have shown that they are far less corrupt than men, a Cabinet Minister said yesterday.
Officially opening the first Zimbabwe Gender Justice and Local Government Summit in Kadoma, the Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Dr Ignatius Chombo, said he had not disciplined a woman councillor since the last harmonised elections in 2008.
He said that alone should make the electorate vote for more women in the forthcoming elections.
Dr Chombo said his ministry was dedicated to achieving the 50-50 representation of women in leadership positions by 2015, as espoused in articles 12 and 13 of the Sadc Protocol on Gender and Development, because the few women in key positions had shown that they deserved it.
He said gender issues did not mean that women were being favoured over men, but that equal opportunities should be availed to everyone so that both men and women were given the chance to contribute to meaningful social and economic development.
He said a good example of gender equality and sensitisation lay in information he had received to the effect that at Musasa Project things had also improved, with more men than women coming for counselling.
