China’s huge cotton reserves stabilise prices

Harare Bureau
COTTON Outlook director Mr Michael Edwards has said China’s huge state reserves of cotton would this year bring stability to prices on the international markets.
Mr Edwards told delegates attending the 10th African Cotton Association Annual Congress held recently in the resort town of Victoria Falls that by the end of February this year China had purchased 2 700 000 tonnes of cotton in the 2011/12 season and had an additional 1 000 000 tonnes of foreign         cotton.
“China’s intervention price of 19 800 yuan per tonne in the 2011/12 season has also guaranteed markets of the availability of cotton so there is no reason to effect changes in the prices,” he said.
