New mass bus system for city

Michael Chideme Municipal Reporter
HARARE residents could soon start enjoying the benefits of a mass bus transport system if council approves a proposal by an Indian firm Ashok Leyland.
Council has since indicated its intention to have kombis outlawed because they have failed to meet the city’s transport needs.
According to the proposed scheme, bus lanes will be marked on all major roads while the old pick-up and drop-off points in the CBD will be resuscitated.
There are indications that a bus starting off in Mabvuku-Tafara can proceed to Kuwadzana or a bus from
Chitungwiza will proceed to Parirenyatwa Hospital and beyond.
At least 500 conventional buses are required to service the city and its satellite towns of Chitungwiza, Ruwa and Epworth.
The city has guaranteed to protect routes to be serviced by a mass bus transport system through denying other users permits to ensure the investor recoups his return on investment.
Ministers snub Prime Minister’s ‘cabinet’

Sydney Kawadza Assistant News Editor
PRIME Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s bid to chair Cabinet in President Mugabe’s absence yesterday flopped when Zanu-PF ministers boycotted the meeting.
The meeting was called on the pretext of following up on issues raised in the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Policy at last Thursday’s Council of Ministers’ meeting.
The Prime Minister’s spokesman Mr Luke Tamborinyoka confirmed the meeting did not go ahead as scheduled.
He, however, expressed dismay that Zanu-PF ministers boycotted the meeting which he said had been called on the recommendation of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Minister Saviour Kasukuwere.
But Minister Kasukuwere dismissed Mr Tamborinyoka’s assertions and questioned why the meeting had been called on a Tuesday, instead of Thursday.
