Lawyer demands US$3 000 maintenance

A UNITED KINGDOM-based lawyer flew into Harare to claim US$3 000 monthly maintenance for a 14-year-old child she had with a Zimbabwean businessman.
Ms Ruvimbo Jacqueline Pfumojena took Bobbi Fuel and Transport director Mr Sydney Farirai to the Harare Civil Court yesterday seeking maintenance.
The boy is studying and staying with his mother in the UK.
“Your Worship, Mr Farirai is a man of means who owns a vast business empire and can afford to pay this amount.
“He has never contributed towards the upkeep of his child for the past 14 years and the child is now in year 10, an equivalent of Zimbabwe’s Form 3,” she said.
Ms Pfumojena said although the boy is attending a non-fee school, he has Zimbabwean citizenship and doesn’t enjoy that benefit.
Mr Farirai, who was represented by his lawyer Mrs Farirai Maenzanise, offered US$200.

President hails police force

PRESIDENT Mugabe has lauded the Zimbabwe Republic Police for ensuring the country enjoys stability and peace and expressed confidence in the force’s ability to deal with political violence during national events like elections.
In his remarks at a passout parade for 545 police officers at Morris Depot in Harare yesterday, the President spelt the importance of unity.
Among the 545 recruits were 147 women.
“We are blessed as Zimbabweans to have the sense to promote and hold onto unity, brotherliness and oneness.
“As has been passed to us over generations, a divided house cannot stand and the police should be commended for ensuring that this stable, peaceful and tranquil environment is preserved.”
The Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces said a true Zimbabwean cadre exuded true Zimbabwean values and
benchmarks in his or her contribution to national development.
“We are just now grappling with what should be the last steps towards our new Constitution.
