Asiagate: To punish or to rehabilitate?

THE biggest story in recent days has been the punishment given to players and officials who took part in match-fixing, now popularly known as Asiagate. The deals took place in a number of Asian countries and in Kenya during the Cecafa tournament between 2007 and 2009, and after the Zifa Independent Ethics Committee presented its findings and recommendations to the board last week, and the Zifa board announced the first batch of sanctions against 15 individuals, which happened to be life bans from all forms of football activities, a lot of was said about this.

Someone said on Facebook, “When a leopard wants to eat its cubs it first accuses them of smelling like goats.” I’m not sure who was being referred to as the leopard, but I want to believe the Zifa board would not want to eat its own cubs as it were, and I hope all the people implicated in the Asiagate reports are not smelling like goats, because that would be disastrous.
