THE gold rush in the Shangani area of Insiza District in Matabeleland South has turned nasty with fights erupting over claims.
However, besides the fights, the rush has also added colour to Shangani, which now is resembling a parking bay in an upmarket mall with dealers driving top of the range vehicles descending on the usually sleepy mining and commercial farming area.
But as the conflicts escalate, some of the miners have now approached the courts to seek recourse over the ownershsip of the claims.

Minister Mangoma arrested

ENERGY and Power Development Minister Elton Mangoma was yesterday arrested on allegations of undermining the authority of the President.
He was picked up by detectives from the CID Law and Order section from Harare Central Police Station in the afternoon and released around 5:30pm after a warned and cautioned statement was recorded from him.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the arrest saying Minister Mangoma allegedly undermined the authority of the President at an MDC-T rally on 18 May this year at Manhenga Business Centre in Bindura.
“I can confirm that he (Mangoma) was picked up for questioning in connection with a case of contravening Section 33 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (undermining the authority of or insulting the President) at a rally,” she said.
