GOVERNORS from the three provinces of Matabeleland yesterday attacked Finance Minister Tendai Biti over inadequate funding of development projects in the region.
This follows revelations that several districts in the region were not benefiting from Public Sector Investment Programmes (PSIP) funds, which Treasury is supposed to give to Rural District Councils (RDCs) every year.
A report from the Ministry of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development shown to our Harare Bureau on Wednesday, revealed that three RDCs from Matabeleland region, Lupane, Tsholotsho and Insiza were eliminated from the list of PSIP beneficiaries despite making proposals to the Ministry of Finance.
No explanation was given for the elimination of the three districts from the list.
The record also revealed that districts from the region that benefited received very little compared to other RDCs from other provinces.
Nkayi RDC for instance was given a mere $100 000, while Buhera where Prime Minister and MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai comes from was given a once off payment of $1 million.
No any other RDC was given an amount above $500 000 and there was no special explanation why Buhera got $1 million.Malajila ends year on high note
