AN ambulance technician and his two sidekicks have been convicted for stealing money from a road accident victim they were supposed to save.
The shocking incident occurred on 7 September 2025, along the Kwekwe-Redcliff Road. Bloodstained cash fell from the victim’s pocket while he was receiving first aid.
Instead of protecting the money, the ambulance technician, Edius Mugonegwa (40), teamed up with Pride Makamba (25) and Anashe Mukwamba (23) to pocket US$1 260 cash and US$10 airtime.
When the victim regained consciousness at Kwekwe General Hospital, he noticed the money was missing and immediately reported it to police.
Swift action by CID Kwekwe led to the arrest of the trio, and part of the stolen loot was recovered.
The Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court handed down the following sentences:
• Mugonegwa: 18 months imprisonment, with three months suspended for five years. The remaining 15 months were converted to 825 hours of community service.
• Makamba and Mukwamba: 12 months each, with three months suspended for five years. The remaining nine months were converted to 315 hours of community service.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) condemned the act, saying medical and emergency workers have a duty to protect victims, not exploit them.
“Abuse of trust is unacceptable. Medical and emergency workers must protect victims, not take advantage of them,” the NPAZ said in a statement.
