A couple whose two-month-old daughter died after being vaccinated at Mpilo Central Hospital is blaming the hospital staff for the death but the hospital insists post mortem results will guide them on the probable cause of death.
Parents of the baby, Bhekimpilo Tshuma (ABOVE) and Lucie Mudondo are yet to come to terms with the death of baby Sibusiso Tshuma.
Circumstances surrounding the incident are that on Monday last week both parents took the baby for her sixth-week immunisation vaccine.
a�?When we arrived at the hospital we were told to go to opportunist infections clinic (OI) where some tests were conducted. We were then referred to the emergency room. They did not tell us why we should go there. At OI the baby received her immunisation on both legs and a drop of medication in her mouth and we left the hospital,a�? said the father.
On their way back home using public transport, the baby started crying. By the time they got home the baby had a running tummy. Eventually the baby became weak and started forming on its mouth. That was a clear sign they had to go back to hospital. But it was a bit too late.
a�?When we arrived at the hospital the babya��s condition had become worse. I think what made it even worse is that nurses on duty did not attend to us on time. It took about an hour for the nurses to attend to the baby and she was declared dead by a doctor upon inspection,a�? said the mother Lucie Mudondo.
Acting public relations officer for Mpilo Central Hospital, Sibusisiwe Faith Ndlovu, said that they were yet to ascertain the cause of the babya��s death.
a�?The baby was referred to OI where some blood tests were done. We dona��t suspect that the immunisation killed the baby. Apparently the baby started coughing when they had left the hospital. They might have fed her something, as she vomited and aspirated afterwards. We will know what caused the death after the postmortem is conducted,a�? she said.
