BCC Golden Stars and Magwegwe Pirates have been promoted to the Zifa Southern Region Division One Soccer League after coming first and second in the Zifa Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Division Two Soccer League. They will join Zifa Matabeleland North sides Makomo of Hwange and Victoria Falls’ Amagagasi who excelled in their league.
An elated BCC Golden Stars chairman Mvinjelwa Mathuthu said their target is to play in the Premiership and follow in the footsteps of Harare City who became the first local authority bankrolled club to make it into the topflight.
“We are on cloud nine because we worked very hard to make sure that we win promotion. We are on transit in the Division One Soccer League because our ultimate goal is to compete in the PSL,” Mathuthu said.
BCC Golden Stars, coached by Chipo Mhlanga, finished at the top of the Bulawayo tier with 55 points from 30 games, just a point above runners-up Magwegwe Pirates.
Magwegwe Pirates coach Farai Mujokoro said they hope to stand the heat and churn out talent for bigger clubs.
“Winning promotion in such a competitive league makes us happy. We never threw in the towel even when we were 12 points behind the log leaders. The boys fought hard and the community supported us through and through. Now that we are in Division One, I believe we will stand the heat and who knows, maybe some of our players might catch big teams’ attention,” said Mujokoro.
The former AmaZulu and Highlanders midfielder is familiar with the demands of the Division One Soccer League having coached New West and Gokwe’s Eagles FC.
Meanwhile, Zifa Bulawayo Metropolitan Province chairman Washington Chimanda said they are going to hold a prizegiving ceremony for BCC Golden Stars and Magwegwe Pirates.
“We have to honour the champions and our message to them is that they have to prepare accordingly so that they are not relegated back to our league at the end of next season,” said Chimanda.
He also confirmed the promotion of Talen Vision and FC LG Vultures from the third tier to Division two.
