Betty Makaya breaks silence

FORGOTTEN urban grooves musician, Betty Makaya, says she got into music by default.

The South Africa-based singer has been keeping a low-profile which prompted some to conclude that she might have joined the music cemetery.

In an interview with H-Metro, she made her intentions clear that music was never her first love.

“Music was never my ambition, so let’s say friends drove me to record in the first place, namely Spencer Masango,” she said.

Betty said she has no intentions of relaunching her music career.

“I enjoy playing around with house interior and have a couple of my own paintings, so creativity for me is not only through music,’” she said.

Betty rose to fame in the early 2000s with hits like ‘‘Usipo’’ and her collaboration ‘‘Kurwizi’’ with the late Jamal.

She is one of the first females to succeed in the urban grooves genre.

In 2004, Betty scooped the Best Urban Grooves Artist and Best Overall Female Artist at the Zimbabwe Music Awards.
