IN the heart of Harare, the beautiful game of football is set to become a powerful catalyst for change as the Brethren In Christ Church Harare District Youths prepare to host an inspiring football tournament on March 29 at the Chikurubi Support Unit in Eastern Harare.

With a vision to unite communities, foster spiritual growth, and combat the challenges faced by today’s youth, this tournament promises to be an event not just for football enthusiasts, but for everyone seeking connection and purpose.

In an interview, Joel Mavurume, a pastor who also doubles as the sports organizer for BICC Harare District, passionately articulated the transformative power of football.

“Football unites people; it has no barriers or language issues because it is for everyone. Beyond just playing, we aim to win souls and foster unity among young people, creating a space where they can engage with each other and learn about Christ through sports,” he said

For the past 17 years, Mavurume and his team have utilized soccer as a means to reach out to everyone in communities.

They have organized numerous matches that not only encourage athleticism but also promote spiritual fellowship.

“What we have seen is soul-winning and affirmation within the church and community. When we play soccer, people come together, and afterward, we share Christ,” he added.

The tournament is expected to attract around 300 participants and spectators, providing a platform for local businesses to showcase their offerings while promoting community engagement.

In a separate interview, the Organising Secretary for BICC Harare District Youths Bukhosi Mbiza, emphasized the importance of inclusivity.

“Our philosophy is ‘100% young people.’ Through this tournament, we empower the youth, allowing them to network, learn, and collaborate with others from various backgrounds.
‘We invite teams who want to register to be part of this ambitious event to come forth and register. The tournament is hosted by the youths by attendance and participation is not limited to the youths,” he stated.

The tournament will feature eight teams competing for exciting prizes, including full kits and a prestigious trophy for the top three teams.

In a bid to foster a safe environment, the organizers have stipulated a strict anti-drug and anti-violence policy, promoting positive behavior among participants and spectators.

“Entrance is free for everyone, but we do not tolerate drugs, violence, and other negative influences. We want to create a healthy and supportive atmosphere for all,” Mbiza affirmed.
As they prepare for the big day, Mavurume and Mbiza remain hopeful that this event will not only entertain but also inspire the youth to rise above challenges such as unemployment, drug abuse, and social isolation. “

There’s a long way to go, but we are committed to closing the gap and ensuring everyone feels included,” Mavurume concluded.

With faith at the core of their mission, the BICC Harare District Youths are set to make a significant impact on their community, one match at a time. Football, as they believe, is more than just a game; it is a vehicle for change, connection, and hope.
