Bulawayo family loses all in devastating blaze

THE Vella family from Suburbs in Bulawayo will forever remember July 28, 2024, as the day their lives were irrevocably altered by a devastating fire.

The blaze consumed their entire home and possessions, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Property worth approximately US$350 000 was destroyed in the fire, which started at around 11.30pm.

The house’s structure, including three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a lounge, dining room, and kitchen, was completely destroyed.

“I heard the lights flickering on and off, followed by an explosion when the fire started” said Ntombizanele Vella (60), the owner of the house.

Vella said the security guard alerted her to the house fire by knocking on her bedroom window. She said there were three people inside the house when the fire started, herself, the baby, and the baby’s caretaker.

“We escaped through an emergency exit window in my bedroom. The fire brigade was called immediately, but they only arrived after my neighbour went to their station to report the incident. The incident has devastated me. I’ve spent my entire life in that house, and I could have died that night.”

In the midst of the ordeal, she said she has received emotional and financial support from friends and relatives. Vella expressed a desire to rebuild and restore her home due to the many memories associated with it but admitted a lack of funds to undertake the project.

She appealed to the public for any form of assistance, whether it be financial, material, or in kind contributions, to help her rebuild her home and recover from the devastating fire. Those wishing to assist the family can contact them on 0772357926.
