While love will be in the air for couples, comedy lovers will be treated to no-holds-barred hilarity as musician and newly elected Bulawayo councillor, Sandra Ndebele-Sibindi, will take the hot seat for her debut comedy roast at Rainbow Hotel in Bulawayo on February 17.
A comedy roast is an event where a roastee (one who is to be ridiculed comically and usually a celebrity) is subjected to a flurry of comic jibes from the roast master (one who moderates the roast) and the roast panel, to make the audience laugh.
Hilarious jibes are set to be thrown at the Ward 20 councillor at what has been dubbed “The comedy roast of Sandra Ndebele”.
The comedic flavour has been elevated with the inclusion of veteran funny man, Carl Joshua Ncube, who has been added to the roast panel.
He joins arts blogger, Kudakwashe Takundwa; media personalities Babongile Sikhonjwa and Ezra “Tshisa” Sibanda; and poetess Sithandazile Dube with Umahlekisa Entertainment founder Ntando Van Moyo directing proceedings.
Chronicle Showbiz spoke to some of the roast panellists who promised a night of comic fireworks.
Ncube, who is the most experienced of the five said it is an honour to roast Ndebele-Sibindi.
“It’s truly an honour to roast her. She’s an icon whom I’ve known and worked with for years. Moreover, I’m eager to bring laughter to the audience.
“Roasting Ezra Tshisa Sibanda will be great too. He’s another legend and the bigger they are, the harder they fall in comedy,” said Ncube.
In the past, he has roasted politician Temba Mliswa, an experience he holds dear, describing it as something to cherish, stating that, “it’s always good for comedy when politicians can take a joke.”
Takundwa said he will not miss the roast this time around after he missed Novuyo Seagirl’s last time out.
“To be honest, I’m thrilled to be part of this esteemed panel, and sharing the stage with some of Zimbabwe’s finest brands is truly amazing. This time, I won’t miss this roast for anything. I promise to be at my best, delivering a good show, filled with humour,” said the Culxure Mag boss.
Roasts have been transforming the comedy circuit for quite some time, providing a laugh-a-minute experience and offering a distinct approach to humour. —@MbuleloMpofu
