Carragher suspended

LONDON. — Jamie Carragher has been suspended by Sky Sports until the end of the English Premier League soccer season, although they have opened the door to him returning next term.

The Liverpool legend was filmed spitting at a car last weekend, hitting a 14-year-old girl, after being goaded by a Manchester United fan.

Carragher apologised for the incident, branding it a “moment of madness” and was suspended by Sky.

And his employers have now confirmed he will not be on our screens for the remainder of the season.

Sky did open the door to him returning for the 2018-19 campaign and vowed to offer him support on the incident.

A spokesman said: “Following an internal review, Sky has suspended Jamie Carragher for the remainder of the football season.

“Jamie has taken full responsibility for what has happened and we will ensure he gets the help he needs to guarantee something like this never happens again.

“Before the start of the next season we will sit down with Jamie to discuss whether he is ready to return to his role.”

It comes shortly after the victim of the incident revealed he had received death threats after the footage came to light.

Andy Hughes decided to go public and appeal through the Mirror for the abuse to stop, for the sake of his family.

Carragher earlier tweeted: “I’ve made a big mistake & accept full responsibility. I am the only person to blame for this sorry situation, so please leave the family alone.”

Hughes also pleaded with Sky not to sack Carragher over the incident.

Carragher joined Sky Sports in 2013 and is now the face of the popular Monday Night Football show.

He was due to appear for Manchester City’s win over Stoke this week before being replaced by Gary Neville.

Neville was among a number of people to defend the ex-Liverpool defender, insisting the incident should not stop them working together. — The Mirror.
