ZIMBABWE’S old guard is standing firm at Queens Sports Club after a shaky start to day two of the first Test against South Africa.
At lunch, the Chevrons are 94/2, still trailing the Proteas by 324 runs, with Sean Williams unbeaten on 45 off 59 balls and skipper Craig Ervine on 24 off 70 deliveries.
South Africa declared on their overnight total of 419/9, and wasted no time in making an impact with the ball.
Speedster Codi Yusuf sent shockwaves through the Zimbabwe camp in the very first over, removing Takudzwanashe Kaitano for a golden duck. He struck again in the fifth, sending Nick Welch back to the pavilion for just four.
Zimbabwe’s woes deepened when Brian Bennett retired hurt on 19 in the seventh over, leaving the Chevrons wobbling. But the experienced duo of Williams and Ervine stepped up, soaking up pressure and putting on a valuable 62-run partnership for the third wicket.
