CHIEF Justice Luke Malaba will preside over his final sitting at the Constitutional Court in Harare on Monday next week, formally marking the end of a judicial career that has spanned over four decades.
The special sitting at Mashonganyika Building, will act as a ceremonial closure to his tenure as the country’s top judicial officer and will be attended by senior judges, legal practitioners and Government officials.
The retirement of Chief Justice Malaba signifies not only the end of an era, but also the commencement of a constitutional process to appoint his successor.
The outgoing Chief Justice will vacate office at midnight on May 14, 2026, as stipulated under Section 186(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, which mandates retirement at the age of 70 unless an extension of five years is elected.
Five years ago, CJ Malaba opted for this extension, making this imminent retirement the definitive sunset of his illustrious career.
Throughout his service, Justice Malaba embodied a steadfast commitment to the judiciary, rising through the ranks from magistrate to Judge of Appeal, and eventually Chief Justice.
His leadership at the helm of the Constitutional Court was marked by landmark rulings and progressive judicial reforms aimed at advancing access to justice for all Zimbabweans.
Legal practitioners describe him as a jurist deeply rooted in the foundational principles of justice, fairness and constitutionalism.
As part of the farewell programme, the Judicial Service Commission confirmed several events to honour the Chief Justice’s contributions.
A formal dinner will be held on May 14, gathering key constitutional bodies including the Executive, Legislature and justice sector institutions.
