A 33-YEAR-OLD Zimbabwean man was arrested on Saturday while trying to smuggle 769 commercial explosives into South Africa.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the arrest.
The suspect, who was driving a truck, was intercepted by police when he had already crossed the border into South Africa.
In a statement, SAPS said the suspect was expected to appear in court today on charges of smuggling and possession of explosives.
“The concerted efforts by the police at the Beitbridge Border Post to eradicate the smuggling of illegal goods into the country, continue to yield positive results following the arrest of a 33-year-old suspect in the early hours of Saturday, 23 July 2022, for attempting to smuggle commercial explosives into the country,” the statement reads.
“The suspect was arrested at about 01:30, as he crossed into South Africa from Zimbabwe.
“This was after his truck was stopped and, upon searching it, police discovered commercial explosives concealed inside four big bags.
“Members of the Musina Explosive Unit attended the scene and three reels of detonating cord and, at least 769 units of blasting cartridges, were confiscated.”
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, commended her members for their vigilance in intercepting the suspected smuggler.
