Obviously the D in Winky D does not stand for discord. In fact, from where I stand, Winky is one of the best live performers if not the best in the country. So dear Winky fans and groupies, do not draw your swords yet, I am also a fan. I have followed the Ninja president from the days of Baba musa rova Biggie Man. I remember singing along to that song about 15 times in between Bulawayo and Harare with my Siyaya buddies enroute to Europe. He has always been a darling.
My point is, I will not pass an opportunity to watch this genius. And as a performer I would kill to collaborate with this dude.
He sets the pace and has taken dancehall music to the world. Now back to the discord, donat get me wrong, itas not like all the other musicians do not miss a key or note here and there. We all do or they all do. But that day Winky D owned discord. Ooops my bad, here I am thinking you know which day I am talking about.
First and foremost, congratulations are in order to Musoja Jah Prayzah for successfully launching his album Mdhara Vachauya. I hear even though we beat them in terms of numbers, he packed HICC.
Bulawayo was amazing, he again showed audiences are there to consume the arts, we just need to learn or know how to crack them or even better yet be lucky enough to be accepted.
His performance was top drawer, his album shows promise and people danced the night away.
Jah Prayzah was with his side-kick Winky D on the night. The Ninja President came on just after 11pm and as expected with his set. People sang along from the first song to the last but something was just not right. A few months back, a friend who owns Winya Sounds told me Winky had started monitoring his own sound. They get to a venue, all they need is a channel from the sound desk and boom, itas show time.
See? I like this Winky guy, he sets trends. He is making electric drum kits trendy again. People feared those drums, some even called them toys. But Winky just makes it work. Now he has moved to own monitoring, meaning they now use ear pieces and not the old traditional monitors.
Here is where I think the problem was, let me try bring this closer to home. Itas like using ear phones and singing on top of them, with both ears covered. I mean even speaking is not regulated. You are either too loud or just off.
Instruments were in tune and each time he opened his mouth it was on the next key. Luckily because his music is all catchy and we all love it, we all sang along and at some points we even performed for him. Ear piece requires a lot of getting used to. I mean even the best driver in the land Lewis Hamilton will miss a bend sometimes. It doesnat mean we love him any less. For setting the pace I salute you Winky. Until next week, be safe.
