The pursuit of Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) status has long been a double-edged sword. Promotion marks a peak achievement, yet for many clubs it also signals the start of a slippery descent back toward relegation.
But this season, the script has flipped. It no longer needs Biblical Solomonic wisdom or chameleonic caution to see that a harsh reality now looms over Bulawayo giants Highlanders and their neighbours Chicken Inn. The two sides, both stuck on 38 points, are staring at dreaded relegation as they clash in a potentially decisive derby at Barbourfields Stadium. A single point may be the lifeline each desperately needs.
“We can’t run away from the fixture. That’s the way it is,” said Chicken Inn head coach Joey Antipas.
“The mood in camp is good. Everyone is raring to go and we have a clean bill of health. We are approaching the game the same way we always do. It’s a derby, and the boys know what needs to be done.”
Antipas, a seasoned mentor who has travelled the length and breadth of the country with the Gamecocks for over a decade, carries the comfort of a fully fit squad. The same cannot be said across the city.
“It’s a very crucial fixture for us. We need to make our fans and the entire Bosso family happy,” said Highlanders coach Pieter De Jongh.
“We are worried about the injuries we have, but we will give a fight. We are looking forward to an exciting match that will see us escape relegation. Highlanders doesn’t deserve to go down. We will fight to the end.”
With Bosso’s centenary celebrations on the horizon, the stakes could not be higher.
Kwekwe United have already been relegated, while Bosso, Chicken Inn, Yadah, Triangle, GreenFuel, Bikita Minerals, Manica Diamonds and Dynamos are all still choking on the final-day pressure.
As the PSL landscape evolves, long-term survival hinges on more than promotion alone. Clubs must build stronger youth structures, strengthen scouting systems, and balance ambition with financial discipline.
This season’s struggles serve as a warning to aspiring sides. Promotion remains an alluring dream, but surviving the top flight demands more than desire. The fates of Bosso, Gamecocks, Dynamos, Yadah and Triangle will offer a clear lesson on what it truly takes to endure in the Premier League.
