DINSON Iron and Steel Company has officially received its special economic zone certificate, along with developer and operator permits for the Dinson Integrated Iron and Steel Industrial Park at Inhoek farm in Chirumhanzu district, Midlands Province.
Speaking at the handover ceremony in Harare yesterday, Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA) chief executive Mr Tafadzwa Chinamo said the permit was the culmination of a collaborative effort between Dinson and ZIDA from 2021 when the vision for the SEZ was first proposed.
“Today, we officially hand over the required certification for the operationalisation of the special economic zone and the process has been guided by Statutory Instrument 226 of 2023, the ZIDA Act and internal ZIDA processes as far as special economic zones are concerned,” he said.
The designation of the 800ha site as an SEZ gives Dinson legal and operational status for the industrial park.
This designation allows Dinson to act as the owner, developer and operator of the SEZ, facilitating the attraction and licensing of other investors in the iron and steel value chain and recognising the area as a priority economic zone under the ZIDA framework. It enables Dinson to attract and licence other investors operating in the iron and steel value chain within that zone.
Mr Chinamo reiterated that the SEZ framework supported large-scale investments in industrialisation and export development.
The designation is valid for nine years, which aligns with the lease of the farm.
“But we have no reason, given the zeal and the determination that we see from Dinson, to think that within those nine years, extending that lease would be a problem,” Mr Chinamo said.
Under the zone status, no mining is permitted within 800ha.
