PERRENIAL underachievers, Dangamvura Old Students Association, again failed to shine when it mattered most, while their Zimbabwean counterparts, Chitungwiza Harmony Singers came out tops at the 38th Old Mutual National Choir Festival held in South Africa last weekend.
The impressive Chitungwiza Harmony Singers shrugged off stiff competition to emerge winners, beating eight other groups at the tightly contested fiesta held in Polokwane.
DOSA which is now a blend of young and old choristers travelled to South Africa bubbling with confidence of clinching the coveted prize before settling for fifth position.
While the Mutare-based group failed to make it into Top Three in last year’s edition, the Chitungwiza choristers who were on position three last year did their home work right and raised Zimbabwe’s flag high.
Speaking at the awards presentation ceremony, Old Mutual Polokwane area manager, Musa Baloyi, said this year’s compositions were fittingly dedicated to South Africa’s years of selfless struggle for freedom and democracy – a noble struggle that opened opportunities and transformed lives.
He said the festival was a sponsorship that was close to the organisation’s hearts because it brought together people from across South Africa’s nine provinces as well as neighbouring countries.
“Through this kaleidoscope of songs and fine costumes, in the various languages of our country, we hope to contribute to the strengthening of the cultural treasures that make us unique rainbow nation.
“Through our support of this event we strive not only to be the custodian of choral music as a fully-fledged, historically important art form, but we also want to help bring to life our communities’ desire to be inspired to do great things,” said Baloyi.
