FC Platinum goalkeeper Petros Mhari is one of the most underrated goalkeepers in the land but he is steadily proving people wrong.
His exploits between the sticks have helped FC Platinum maintain their position on the apex of the log standings.
The former Hwange goal minder who played second fiddle to retired Chipangano esteemed goalie Timothy Sibanda before he joined FC Platinum in 2013 has so far kept 12 clean sheets this season. He has featured in all 23 league games.
Last year when Chicken Inn goalminder Elvis Chipezeze and Dynamos Tatenda Mukuruva emerged as the highest rated goalminders in the country, Mhari had kept 15 clean sheets in 28 league games for FC Platinum.
While last seasonas Golden Glove accolade eluded him, the 29-year-old Mhari looks set to win the 2016 Goalkeeper of the Year and is certainly among the favourites to win the Soccer Star of the Year award.
a?Mharias form is unbelievable,a? said legendary former Highlanders and FC Platinum goalkeepers coach Peter a?Oxoa? Nkomo.
a?In my career I have had a lot of good goalkeepers. For example, Tapuwa Kapini, Edmore a?MaMkhwebua? Sibanda and Washington Arubi were one of my best goalkeepers, but Mhari is having a great season.a?
Chipezeze, the countryas reigning Goalkeeper of the Year is also impressed with his counterpartas fine run.
a?Look at the improvements he has made from where he was three years ago, it is absolutely staggering,a? said Chipezeze.
Highlandersa first choice goalkeeper Ariel a?Mangoyea? Sibanda, a 2012 Goalkeeper of the Year also sees the Mhari effect.
a?He has so far stopped everything,a? said Sibanda.
FC Platinumas holding midfielder Winston Mhango, who has also been on top of his game since the start of the season reckons Mhari has helped their club a lot.
a?He has helped the team with his goalkeeping and we know he is one of the best in Zimbabwe,a? the midfielder exclaimed, and with such a fine record, Mhangoas words certainly hold a great deal of resonance.
Mhari is the FC Platinum captain and if his club does clinch the 2016 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title and he is voted King of Zimbabwean football, he will join ex national team goalkeepers Energy Murambadoro (2003) and Washington Arubi (2011) on the list of goalies who have claimed title plus the Golden Glove.
