A MUTARE man left the court gallery in stitches after claiming that it was his right to beat up his wife and instil discipline in her.Zivanai Chinaka (38) appeared before senior magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura, at Mutare Criminal Courts facing charges of contravening a protection order granted by the court to his wife Mercy Katerere when he beat her up.
Chinaka (38) was convicted on his own plea of guilty and was fined $100, failure of which he would serve an alternative 60 days imprisonment with effect from October 30.
The court heard it that on September 30, Katerere’s young sister visited the couple, but the brother-in-law would not have any of it since he had unsettled scores with his in-law.
“He chased her away and when his wife was trying to restrain him, he beat her up. Katerere sustained a number of injuries on her head and had to seek medical treatment,” said State prosecutor, Mr Brian Goto.
Asked why he had assaulted his wife, Chinaka begged for leniency.
“I erred, Your Worship. I was extremely angry and I thought it was my right to discipline my wife whenever she failed to respect my orders and instructions,” he said.
