OFFERING a free ride to two strangers backfired for a Burma Valley man when he was shot at and robbed recently.
Richard Mwahura (44) was driving his car, a Range Rover, along Ngundu-Tanganda Road when he was stopped by two male adults.
Police confirmed the incident and said the two asked to be dropped off at the next business centre, Mbeure.
“When they arrived at Mbeure Business Centre they gave an excuse that they had no change and promised to pay at the next business centre.
“When they arrived at Rimbi Business Centre they refused to be dropped off. They directed the complainant to drive towards Checheche Growth Point,” said Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Enock Chishiri.
It is alleged that when they reached the 19km peg, the accused said they wanted to be dropped off and withdrew two pistols and pointed them at Mwahura.
The two demanded money from him as well as his mobile phone. They managed to take $40 and a c1 Nokia mobile phone.
They tried to hijack Mwahura’s vehicle, but he resisted.
One of the suspects shot him on the leg just below the knee, while the other targeted the head, but the bullet slightly grazed him.
The two suspects disembarked from the vehicle and took to their heels thinking that he had died.
“Mwahura managed to drive to St Peter’s Mission Hospital where he was treated and a police report was made. The suspects are still at large,” said Insp Chishiri.
He urged motorists not to give strangers rides.
“We always urge motorists not to give rides to strangers because of the high rate of crime involving robbers and carjackers.
“We appeal to anyone with information that will lead to the arrest of these two criminals to report to any nearest police station,” said Insp Chishiri.
