Commissioner of the exhibition Mrs Doreen Sibanda says Zimbabwe’s exhibition, which is jointly organised by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, will be the second for the country.
“The festival is taking place from the 1st of June to the 24th of November 2013 in Venice, Italy.
“Zimbabwe, through the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, has been officially invited to participate in this prestigious event that is fondly referred to as the Olympics for the world of visual art.
“The National Gallery of Zimbabwe has been asked by the ministry to implement this project,” said Mrs Sibanda.
The National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s chief curator, Mr Raphael Chikukwa, will curate the pavilion.
The pavilion will not only consolidate Zimbabwe’s recognition on an international platform but will allow a better understanding of Zimbabwe’s contemporary art.
“Participation in the Venice Biennale can only take place through the generosity and goodwill of the supporters and partners who continually pledge financial assistance to the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
“Attendance at such a prestigious event speaks volumes about the ability of a country to pursue and excel in the arts and allows the image of its country to be greatly enhanced,” said Mr Chikukwa.
The exhibition gives a platform for local artists to showcase Zimbabwean art and this is an opportunity for the country to show the world what Zimbabwe produces in terms of visual art pieces which include paintings, wood and stone sculptures and installation art.
