The diverse audience went crazy when the Harare- based group put up a splendid performance of songs that included the popular “Sean Timba” by Suluman Chimbetu, “Samanyemba” by the late Tongai Moyo and an array of hits from Thomas Mapfumo.
The band did not limit itself to sungura, but explored other genres that included rock, jazz and gospel. What was most impressive from the youthful group was their ability to jazz up the songs creating exciting versions. Their stage presence was even livelier since they added flavour through dance.
Tambarimba manager Don “Chidaz” Chidavaenzi, who was visibly ecstatic about the team’s act, credited the success to hard work and teamwork.
“The response we are getting is overwhelming, but it is the results of talent and perseverance on the part of the team. Since it is our first time on such a platform, we put so much work in rehearsing.
“As part of our preparations, we brought on board a choreographer to help the boys through their paces,” he said.
Chidavaenzi added that their successful Hifa performance had encouraged them to look for new platforms to showcase their talents.
“We are now looking for opportunities to perform at other shows. We have in the past staged shows at corporate functions, weddings and cultural gigs,” he said
Tambarimba is a marimba group that comprises five young men who came together in their school days at Prince Edward School.
Although all the members have mastered all the instruments, Nigel Simbanegavi specialises on the bass marimba, Denzel Moses on tenor, Martin “Coach” Nyirenda on soprano and Vincent Chanza on the drums.
