A YEAR has passed since Zimbabwean football lost one of its most admired midfielders, but the memory of Brian “BB” Banda continues to burn brightly in the hearts of football lovers.
For many in Bulawayo, June remains a difficult month, a time of reflection and remembrance for a player who rose from the city’s football structures to become one of the country’s most respected midfield generals.
Born and bred in Bulawayo, Banda’s football journey was a story of talent, hard work and dedication. From his early days in the City of Kings and Queens, he developed into a classy midfielder whose vision, calmness on the ball and leadership qualities earned him widespread respect across the domestic game.
His name became synonymous with excellence during his time at Highlanders, where he won the admiration of the Bosso faithful. Wearing the famous black-and-white jersey, Banda established himself as a dependable performer, capable of dictating play and inspiring those around him.
He later continued his distinguished career at FC Platinum, where his experience and quality further cemented his reputation as one of Zimbabwe’s finest midfielders of his generation.
Although one year has gone by since his untimely passing, Banda’s influence remains evident. Football supporters continue to share memories of his finest moments, while former teammates and coaches frequently speak of a player who combined immense talent with humility and professionalism.
For Highlanders supporters, he remains one of the club’s cherished sons. For FC Platinum followers, he is remembered as a warrior who served the platinum miners with pride. For Bulawayo, he remains one of the city’s football exports whose contribution to the beautiful game will never be forgotten.
His passing left a void in Zimbabwean football, but his legacy continues to inspire young players who dream of following in his footsteps.
As the football fraternity marks one year since his departure, the tributes remain heartfelt and unanimous, Brian Banda was more than just a footballer. He was a role model, a teammate, a friend and a true servant of the game.
Though time has moved on, the memories have not faded.
One year on, Zimbabwe remembers Brian “BB” Banda, a midfield maestro, a proud son of Bulawayo, and a football legend gone too soon.
Gone from the pitch, but never from our hearts. Continue to rest in peace, BB A.K.A Ndazula. —@FungaiMuderere
