A POLICE officer in Kwekwe must have uttered truly sincere prayers from the heart when a man he had been sent to arrest, for severely beating up a woman, set upon him with a knife.
The officer tore through the streets in pure terror as an unrelenting Nesbirt Banda (41) breathed down his neck with the knife inches away from inflicting fatal damage.
The cop has his quick feet to thank, otherwise chances are high that we could be referring to him in the past tense now.
Banda will spend 18 months behind bars after reinforcements were deployed to finally subdue him.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), in a statement, said Banda of Amaveni, Kwekwe, went on a rampage on 21 July 2025, viciously assaulting a woman before turning on the police.
“The offender unleashed a flurry of kicks and punches on the victim before hitting her on the back with an iron bar,” read the NPAZ statement.
The battered woman reported the attack, prompting police to dispatch an officer to apprehend Banda. But instead of complying, he turned the situation into chaos.
“When the officer arrived, the offender resisted arrest and chased him away while brandishing a knife,” said the NPAZ.
The violent showdown only ended when reinforcements were called in, leading to Banda’s eventual capture.
He was hauled before the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court and slapped with an effective 18-month jail sentence for assault and resisting arrest.
The NPAZ has since issued a stern warning to the public.
“Members of the public are urged to desist from resisting arrests and assaulting the police,” the authority said.
The case has highlighted growing concerns over attacks on law enforcement officers, with authorities vowing to clamp down on those who challenge the rule of law.
