2 KINGS 8:1-6
Then spake Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household, and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn: for the LORD hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years. [2] And the woman arose, and did after the saying of the man of God: and she went with her household, and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. [3] And it came to pass at the seven years’ end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines: and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land. [4] And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that Elisha hath done. [5] And it came to pass, as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life, that, behold, the woman, whose son he had restored to life, cried to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life. [6] And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed unto her a certain officer, saying, Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field since the day that she left the land, even until now.
Elisha, the prophet told a certain woman to leave the land because there was going to be a famine for seven years.
She returned to the Land of Israel at the end of seven years, and went straight to the king’s house where, by God’s providence, the story of how her son had been restored to life before, was being narrated to the king, who was fascinated by it.
She did not go straight to her house because someone else, during the seven years of her absence from it, had without her permission, taken over its occupation, enjoying its produce and profits. She instead went straight to the king’s palace to seek an order of restoration of her property from a squatter. She had no might to fight him off her land. Her feebleness appealed to the strength of the king.
As she entered the king’s palace, Gehazi who was narrating her story to the king, blurted out: “that is the woman I was talking about, oh King!”. Glory to God! May your name be mentioned before the King of Glory, at the right time.
Taking advantage of the occasion, the woman immediately cried to the king for the restoration of her land.
On hearing her plea, the king appointed a certain officer to go ahead of her to remove the squatter and restore to her the house, field and all the profits of the field that the squatter had enjoyed during her banishment.
For seven years, she had not enjoyed the fruits of her field. A squatter was enjoying everything.
Ecclesiastes 8:4 says where the word of a king is, there is power. The word of the king is law and order. The occupier was mightier than the woman, but the king was mightier than the occupier. He decreed that her land be restored, together with all that attached to the land.
He appointed an officer to execute his command. It was no longer the duty of the woman to have a face-off with the occupier. It was no longer whether she had might or not. She had a right to the land and had the might of the king. All she needed to do was to follow behind the king’s appointed officer. It was the officer that had the king’s sword. It was the officer that had the king’s word. The woman was a beneficiary.
If you went to your house and found rowdy drunken people having a good time in it, you would chuck them out. If they resist, and claim the right to occupy the house because they are as human as you are, you will produce to them your title to the house. If they insist on unlawful enjoyment of your property you will take your title deed to the courts of law and seek an order of their eviction. The sheriff will be dispatched to eject them. You won’t have to fight them with your might. You will enforce your right.
You have a written deed, to salvation and all spiritual blessings for which Christ died.
The devil, a squatter, has no right to occupy your God-given property. The Holy Ghost, God’s appointed officer, will evict him and restore to you what you did not enjoy for seven years.
It is not by might nor by power. It is by the Lord’s Spirit.
