Gold panner pushed into 27m shaft

A SUSPECTED illegal gold panner in Penhalonga allegedly assaulted and pushed a colleague into a 27-metre deep mineshaft after a misunderstanding over an undisclosed issue.

Lloyd Machipi (31) of Whitgift Village in Takunda, Odzi appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate, Mr Langton Carter, facing attempted murder charges as defined in Section 47 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody.

He will be back in court on February 10.

Ms Tafadzwa Chiwanza prosecuted.

“On February 2, at around 2am, Lloyd Machipi had a misunderstanding with the complainant, Walter Warurama over an undisclosed issue. The accused pushed his colleague and he fell into a mineshaft which is about 27 metres deep. The complainant was rescued by other mine workers. He sustained a swollen head and backbone injuries,” she said.
