BOTTLE stores owners who are defying curfew time by operating outside the stipulated business hours during the current Level 4 lockdown are breaking the law and will be arrested, police in Manicaland have warned.
While liquor is allowed to be sold at these outlets, it is only for consumption off the premises. However, some bottle stores are reportedly accommodating imbibers taking alcohol on-site.
Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luxson Chananda warned those involved in the alleged practice, saying police will continue enforcing the lockdown measures and arrest those caught consuming alcohol at bottle stores.
He added that those gathering at beerhalls and shebeens also face the full wrath of the law.
The police’s warning follows several reports that some bottle stores are operating beyond curfew time, while other liquor outlets, mainly beerhalls and shebeens, in Chikanga, Dangamvura and Sakubva are clandestinely selling alcohol.
Bars, beerhalls and night clubs remain closed and those who breach lockdown regulations face arrest and will be reported to the Liquor Licensing Board, which may revoke their licences.
