GREEN Fuel have taken full control of the ZIFA Eastern Region Division One championship race.
They edged closest rivals Mutare City Rovers 3-2 in a thriller at the Green Fuel Sports Arena on Saturday.
The win saw Green Fuel move nine points clear of second-placed Mutare City.
Green Fuel coach, Lloyd Mutasa, said the win was crucial for his boys who are now in a better position to gain top-flight promotion.
Mutasa believes the unity of purpose in the team’s structure has helped him to be in pole position.
“Our boys played well and scored more to secure a win for us,” he said. “We said this is the team that is chasing us.
“We should not look for other teams to beat them, we should do it by ourselves. The young boys responded well to the call.
“It will relieve our boys of the pressure.
“There is a unity of strength in the institution. If you look at the supporters, the executive, the players, the technical team, the backroom staff, the fans, and all those who are involved in the set-up, everything is good.”
He added:
“If the old people’s home can help us fulfill the vision of the institution then it’s okay with us.
“We were hired to get Green Fuel into the Premier League, having the kids or old people’s home, to do that is neither here nor there.
“What is important is to get there.
“The target was the championship, from the beginning of the season, and it remains the target.”
Mutare City coach, Kennedy Kachara, said they lost to the better side.
“We lost to a better team, we were out to collect maximum points but it did not go as planned, despite us giving it all we had.
“We are looking into the next coming fixtures as we try to regroup and cover the gap between us and them.
“Mathematically, we still have a chance and we are not giving up yet.”
Former Dynamos defender Obey Mwerahari, who now captains Green Fuel, said the result will motivate them in the next coming fixtures.
“The win will motivate us going into the next games. If we manage to win a few more games, we will likely be done with our quest for qualifying.
“As a team, I think we should improve on defending set-pieces. Today we conceded goals from set-pieces.”
“I will keep on playing if the team still wants me.
“When the team feels it’s done for me, it will be okay for me as I already have plans but I think I can still go for two or three more years.”
