THE CASTLE Lager Premier Soccer League action has reached the halfway mark with a total of 213 goals scored.
However, six teams, Highlanders, Tsholotsho, Chicken Inn, Triangle, Mutare City RoversA and FC Platinum have a game in hand each. Prior to past weekendas games, 198 goals had been scored.
From a total of 240 matches that were played last season 502 goals were scored, 14 goals up from the 2014 season.
The past matches produced a total of 15 goals, with Tsholotsho FC scoring the most number of goals after beating visiting Hwange 3-0.
The development saw Iziqholo ZeZhwane break their own record since their last yearas maiden dance in the countryas elite football league.
It was the first time that the Lizwe Sweswe-coached side scored more than two goals in Premier Soccer League action.
Interestingly, their biggest loss so far was on a 3-0 scoreline at the hands of FC Platinum last season.
Sweswe was a relieved man as his side collected their first full set of points in eight games when they turned on the heat in the second half to beat Chipangano.
A brace from Mostafa Ponyera and a goal from Blessing Sibanda provided relief for Iziqholo whose poor run had set them on the path of relegation.
The win saw the Tsholotsho multitude sing and dance, something they had long forgotten to do.
Sweswe was glad his charges finally scored saying it had been their Achilles heel as he felt they were playing but the goals were elusive.
The win saw Tsholotsho, who had been placed second from bottom, leapfrog debutants Mutare City Rovers as they now have 11 points from 14 games.
a?We played well against Hwange and Iam glad we managed to get goals that have been eluding us. I hope this win will inspire us to more victories ahead and I am confident we can survive relegation,a? said an elated Sweswe.
If Highlanders manage to hold on to in-form Bruce Kangwa who is in Tanzania on trials, the Warriors player might surpass the 14 goals scored by his former teammate Knox Mutizwa last season.
Mutizwa, now with South Africaas Bidvest Wits, is the reigning PSL Golden Boot Award winner. He kissed the local football league action goodbye with four under his belt.
Kangwa is on seven goals meaning he has an average of a goal in every two matchesA as the Bulawayo giants have played 14 matches, their latest being a famous 1-0 win over CAPS United.
The trio of Obadiah Tarumbwa (Chicken Inn), Leonard Tsipa (CAPS United ) Gift Mbweti (Hwange) is two goals shy of the Tshabalala-bred Kangwa.
The speedy Kangwa also broke new ground by becoming the first player in the local league to scoop the Player of the Month for three consecutive months in April, May and June.
He is set to pocket $1 000 for each month. For the month of April, he shared the award with former FC Platinum striker Obrey Chirwa who is now based in Tanzania.
Highlanders coach Erol Akbay was April Coach of the Month. FC Platinumas Norman Mapeza was voted May Coach of the Month with Lloyd Mutasa of Dynamos scooping the June award.
