Harare’s Ward 18 Councillor Rufaro Matsika has voiced concern over the invasion of wetlands in the area.

Ward 18 covers Borrowdale Brooke, Helensvale, Greystone Park, Philadelphia, Hogerty Hill, Umwinsdale and Kambanje.

“Land in Ward 18 is highly valuable and many people are rushing to acquire land there,” she said in a statement.

“This has culminated in a surge in demand. Unscrupulous land barons are taking advantage of this situation. Land is being allocated everywhere, with wetlands being wantonly invaded.”

She said residents are concerned because when such decisions are made, they are not consulted.

“These developments are in direct contravention of environmental laws. The excessive greed driving this lawlessness is disturbing,” she said.

“I would like to inform residents concerned that the district office and I have notified all stakeholders, including the Ministry of Local Government. We are seized with the matter.”
