THE Meteorological Services Department has predicted more heavy rains countrywide in the next few days, triggering fears of more floods.
Hundreds of people from Tsholotsho and Masvingo’s Tokwe-Murkosi area had their homes destroyed the torrential rains which have pounded the country since early this year.
The floods also destroyed property and killed livestock.
The Met Department yesterday forecast rains characterised by thunderstorms.
“In Matabeleland South and North, Bulawayo, Masvingo, and Manicaland it should be mostly cloudy with scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms. The storms may be heavy in places due to the heat that we have been experiencing lately and morning rain is possible in places.
“It should be warm during the day becoming mild overnight,” read the forecast.
The department said in Mashonaland, Midlands and Harare the weather will be partly cloudy with isolated afternoon and evening thundershowers.
The department is on record calling members of the public to desist from crossing flooded rivers and standing under tall objects as this might result in casualties.
According to a report by the Civil Protection Unit on Tsholotsho, one child died, over 10 children were injured and an unaccountable number of livestock was swept away by the immense overflows.
Last week, a high powered ministerial delegation led by the Senior Minister of State in the President’s Office Cde Simon Khaya Moyo visited Tsholotsho to assess the impact of the floods and offer assistance to the area. He said the situation was under control.
