MATABELELAND North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Richard Moyo, has hailed the ambitious 10 000-residential-stands King City housing project, describing it as a transformative development set to redefine the economic and physical landscape of Umguza District.
Speaking during the official opening of the Kingsbury Estate Gatehouse under the Radar Holdings Limited development, Minister Moyo said the project marked a significant milestone in public-private sector collaboration and underlined the critical role private capital plays in driving national development.
“This is a clear demonstration of strong private sector involvement in national development,” said Minister Moyo.
Radar Holdings Limited is spearheading the development of the self-contained residential estate, King City located along the Bulawayo-Gwanda Road.
The project is set to deliver 10 000 residential stands and has already seen some beneficiaries commencing construction on their properties.
During the event, Minister Moyo also officiated over the handover of 30 title deeds to beneficiaries, a move he said would instil confidence in the project while rooting out illegal land barons.
“The handover of 30 title deeds is a huge initiative that gets rid of land barons, gives security to homeowners, and instils confidence in the project,” he said.
He underscored the economic significance of the development, noting that key infrastructure components such as internal roads and sewer reticulation systems are laying the foundation for future investment.
“Projects such as King City are critical in achieving national economic goals.
“They represent significant private sector investment, which is the backbone of any thriving economy,” said Minister Moyo.
“The development of roads and sewer reticulation systems within the estate lays the groundwork for further growth and attracts more investment into our province.
“It is a clear signal that Matabeleland North is open for business and ready to partner with serious and committed developers.”
He further said the King City initiative exemplifies the spirit of devolution by allowing local communities to take the lead in shaping their economic destiny.
“This is the very essence of devolution allowing our province to become a vibrant economic hub.
“It shows that private-sector development, when aligned with national policy, can be a powerful engine for inclusive economic growth.
This is a model we hope to see replicated across all sectors.”
One of the title deed recipients, Mr Ronald Jenami, praised the Second Republic for prioritising security of tenure for homeowners, adding that such moves empower citizens and eliminate the threat of land barons.
“I am a proud owner of this piece of land and this gives me confidence in developing the stand,” he said.
“The Second Republic is empowering citizens and systematically getting rid of land barons.”
Radar Properties Executive Director Mr Walter Zimunya said the issuance of title deeds was more than just a legal formality, it was a symbol of trust, security, and fulfilment of promise.
“The issuance of title deeds aligns well with President Mnangagwa’s vision to distribute title deeds this year,” he said.
Mr Zimunya said the King City project is designed to inspire other developers and support national objectives around homeownership and inclusive urban development.
“The broader scope of the project will accommodate schools, churches, and industrial zones to create a holistic and self-sustaining smart city,” he said.
Radar Properties has also set aside 430 hectares for industrial development within the project, further underlining the integrated vision behind King City.
The King City project feeds into the broader national housing programme, which targets the delivery of 1.2 million housing units by 2030.
The initiative is part of the Second Republic’s vision to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy.
Access to affordable and decent housing remains a cornerstone of this transformation agenda.
The Zimbabwe National Human Settlement Policy, launched by President Mnangagwa in 2021, provided a framework for the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities to work with the private sector in addressing the country’s housing backlog.
As demand for housing continues to rise in tandem with population growth, such strategic partnerships are seen as critical to accelerating housing delivery across Zimbabwe.
