A MORNING prayer session turned grim yesterday after a Mutare man stumbled upon the skeletal remains of an unidentified woman at Christmas Pass, about 100 metres off the Harare-Mutare Highway.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the discovery.
“We received a report of the discovery of human remains at Christmas Pass, and our officers attended the scene and established that the remains belonged to a female adult,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
The remains were found by Chizhande Sangi (51), of Fairbridge Park, who had gone to the mountain for prayer.
“Sangi had gone to the mountains in the morning for prayers. Upon arrival, he looked for a place to conduct his prayers and discovered the deceased lying at the scene facing upwards,” he said, adding that no identification documents or personal belongings were recovered, making it difficult to immediately establish the deceased’s identity.
“The deceased was wearing navy blue trousers, a light blue striped body top and sky-blue denim jacket. Braided hair extensions were also found scattered around the scene. Nothing that could assist with the identification of the deceased was recovered at the scene,” he said.
The skeletal remains were removed and taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death as well as assist with identification.
Police are appealing for anyone with information about missing relatives or who may know the identity of the deceased to come forward.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
