‘INTOTAL BAND IS NOT MINE’

FOR years, many music lovers have believed that veteran guitarist and producer Clive Mono Mukundu is the man behind Harare’s popular Intotal Band.

But the music legend has finally set the record straight, he does not own the youthful outfit!

Speaking candidly, Mukundu dismissed the long-held belief, saying he is merely the band’s “mentor-in-chief” and not its founder or owner.

“Yes, a number of people believe I own Intotal Band. The truth is I don’t even have the financial muscle to own a band.

“I’m simply their mentor-in-chief because they’re all my children. They have a capable manager who handles the business side while they focus on the creative side,” said Mukundu.

The revelation has surprised many fans, especially because Mukundu’s son, talented instrumentalist Takakunda Mukundu, is one of the band’s key members alongside Naphtali Chivandikwa.

The group is led by director Joseph Chinouriri, popularly known as Jose Sax, and has built a strong following through its polished cover versions of Zimbabwean classics, earning backing from a leading financial institution.

Meanwhile, Intotal Band is gearing up for its much-anticipated Ecobank Legends Night show, set for the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) Hall 4, in Bulawayo on June 13.

The event, which celebrates Zimbabwean music legends through live performances of timeless hits, returns to the City of Kings and Queens after a successful debut last year.

Music legend Leonard Zhakata, cultural ensemble Iyasa and dancer-musician Sandra Ndebele are expected to add sparkle to the night as supporting acts.

Jose Sax said the band is excited to reconnect with Bulawayo fans.

“Legends Night was initially a Harare event, but last year we decided to take the movement to other cities, including Bulawayo.

“We had an amazing experience during our debut in the City of Kings. We’re coming back bigger and better and fans should expect fireworks. This year’s show will be an improvement on last year’s event,” he said.

Last year’s sold-out edition featured tributes to music icons including Oliver Mtukudzi, Leonard Dembo and Tongai Moyo.

One of the standout moments was a surprise rendition of Bhulugwe Lami by the Cool Crooners, while veteran musicians were honoured for their outstanding contribution to Zimbabwean music.

As Legends Night continues to grow, it is fast becoming one of the country’s premier platforms for celebrating local music legends while bridging generations through culture and entertainment.
