IN a suspected case of juju, learners at Gaza High School and their parents were sent into panic mode on Wednesday morning after a bowl with broken eggs and charcoal were found at the main entrance of the school.

The school headmaster, Mr Stanley Thondlana, had to urgently call the School Development Committee executive members.

The committee stopped learners from moving close to the mysterious objects.

Close to the bowl was a 2-litre container filled with a greenish liquid.

Parents who witnessed the incident expressed mixed opinions, with some quick to say there is serious infighting at the school.

Some superstitious ones linked the incident to the murder of a resident who was allegedly shot dead at the same spot on the New Year’s Eve of 2020.

They believe that his assailants may have visited the spot to conduct some rituals to keep the man’s avenging spirit at bay.

A security guard who was among the first people to see the bowl, Mr Sanderson Manhlabani, said: “I only noticed these things this morning when I opened the gate for staff members and learners. The bowl was broken into three pieces and the eggs were also crushed.

“A 2-litre container with greenish substances was also at the place. Water was also sprinkled all over the place. I phoned the school authorities who rushed to inspect the area,” said Mr Mahlabani.

In an interview, the SDC chairperson, Mr Vigilance Selimani said: “I don’t know the motive behind this. We contacted our SDC elections peacefully early this year and everything is working well between the committee and the staff at the school.”

However, Manicaland Traditional Healers Association chairperson, Mr James Gabza said the mysterious occurrence is an indication that someone has bad blood with the school authorities.

He said there is need for a cleansing ceremony to be conducted to bring sanity at the school.

“According to our traditional belief systems, an egg means life. So when someone destroys an egg, it means his or her intentions are to spill blood. As traditional healers, a bowl is an important tool of our trade, so its destruction means a signal is being sent to someone that his or her demise is neigh.

“These are tools used by some people for ritual purposes,” he said.

In 2018, another juju scare occurred at Chipinge High school when a live chicken and a bowl filled with blood was found at the entrance of the school gate in the morning.

The incident occurred after hotly contested SDC elections.
